How our project came to be:
This year my partner and I decided to do history fair on a topic that interested us. First off, we chose the topic fashion. We both liked fashion and one us us even planned on going into that field. We researched different styles and eras and decided fashion in general was too big. There were so many eras, times, and people that made changes in fashion that it was just too much. So we decided on fashion from a more recent time to today. But still, that was too big a topic considering fashion and trends are from all around the world. So we picked the topic of changes, in skirts and dresses through the years. We did a ton of research and found a lot of information and our topic was finally narrow enough to do a project on. Though as we did more research we found that this topic seemed a bit boring and one note. Also just like the saying goes "history repeats itself" so do trends. The skirt and dress kept going from short to long and long to short. But, upon our research we did find our final topic, the corset.
We found that through all the time we went through that the corset was pretty prominent. So we started research on the corset. We looked up things like where did it come from, who invented it, what are the pros and cons? Further and further through the years we found one of the most revolutionary things that happened to the corset . We found The Warner Brother's Corset Company. Corsets back then were extremely unhealthy. They caused sun stroke, miscarriages, and even broken ribs. So a man named Dr. Lucien Warner sought out to make a healthier corset. He invented a corset that gave the perfect shape women wanted but also gave enough flexibility and movement that no injuries would occur. As we did more research we found that the health corset was not the only thing Warner's company revolutionized. We found that Warner's company was also responsible for the ABC way we use to calculate bra cup sizes and that the company owns some of the most famous clothing brands we use today like Chaps, Speedo, and even Calvin Klein. My partner and I then decided to take on Warner's to Warnaco history. We had finally decided on a topic and stuck to it. Once we got all our research done on the corset and Warner's we decided to start figuring out the way we wanted to display it.
At first we said that we would make an exhibit. My partner and I are both pretty creative so we thought we could come up with something amazing. Warner’s was originally a huge factory with housing, classrooms, resturants and library for the large number of imigrated women employed there, so we started drawing up designs to recreate a smaller version of it. She and I went to craft stores and hardware stores to see what materials we needed. As we got deeper into the history of Warner's and Warnaco we thought that a website might be more appropriate, so we signed up for Weebly for a little while, while we still got our research we just played around with the website to see how we could design it. My partner picked the colors and the formats we would use. After weeks of research we finally started to put all the information on the website.
My partner set up tabs to put in all the information and we started. As we added information and organized we thought it would be cool to add music and pictures. After hours of editing, spell checking and making sure everything was as perfect as possible we finished. This is how our 2012 history fair project came to be.
